Long beach – Sediment Transport

An analysis was performed on the potential modifications to sediment transport and the associated conditions related with the planned construction of a new jetty on the eastern entrance of a harbor in Mississippi. The planned harbor modification was to be constructed adjacent to the present beach system and, thus, potentially have and affect on nearshore transport.  Sedimentation and water quality were examined for continued safe and environmentally sound use of the facility as were costs associated with maintenance.

An empirical approach using existing data was employed to determine the magnitude, patterns, and trends in sediment transport adjacent to the harbor. This approach helped provide the likely sediment transport scenarios and their components – the ‘Big Picture’ of sediment transport at the location.
